HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR NEW TATTOO

AFTERCARE

We put together a few easy steps for taking care of your tattoo and speeding up healing. In a nutshell, aim to keep the area clean, free of bacteria and properly moisturized.

Step 1
Leave the bandage on for 1 to 4 hours (follow your artist’s recommendation, they know your tattoo best) to prevent contamination.

Step 2
With clean hands, remove the bandage and wash gently with warm water and a mild anti-bacterial or non-scented soap. Remove all traces of blood and plasma. Do not use a washcloth to wash your tattoo. Pat the tattoo dry with a soft clean paper towel then let it air dry. Do not rub it dry. Do not use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to clean your tattoo, as they will dry the skin.

Step 3
Cover the tattoo with a very thin layer of moisturizer such as our Outlaw Aftercare (advise your artist if you have allergies). Do not use Vaseline or pure petroleum jelly as these are known to damage your tattoo and prolong the healing process.

Step 4
Once the tattoo’s initial covering is removed, do not cover it again during the healing process. The tattoo will need to be exposed to the air in order to heal.

Step 5
Wash the tattoo at least twice a day for the first week. Apply Outlaw Aftercare four times a day, especially when you feel the tattoo getting dry and/or itchy. Keeping the tattoo moisturized ensures the least amount of scabbing and peeling, which will reduce colour fading.

#1

KEEP YOUR TATTOO DRY

Do not swim, soak in a hot tub or take a bath for 2 weeks after getting your tattoo. Chemicals like chlorine will cause the tattoo to fade and/or become infected. Soaking the tattoo will also cause the scab to come off faster, and along with it, some of the ink.

#2

STAY OUT OF THE SUN

Do not tan for at least two weeks after receiving your tattoo to allow it to heal. After 2 weeks have passed, you can lay in the sun or use tanning beds as long as you put a light layer of sunscreen (SPF 25 or higher) over the tattoo.

#3

NO SCRATCHING OR PICKING

No scratching or picking! Like any other wound to the skin, your tattoo will itch during the healing process. Scratching or picking will remove the scab and possibly some of the colour from the tattoo.

#4

CHECK YOUR PRODUCTS

The general rule for skin-care products is: If it’s safe for a baby, it’s safe for a tattoo. Always avoid soaps and lotions with perfume and lanolin listed in the ingredients.
